Canada's Education System

Canada's Education system attracts students from all over the world. Though there is no federal department of education, it is maintained to a high standard by each of the provinces or territories and encompasses both publicly-funded and private schools.

It is also divided into three areas including Primary Education, Secondary/Higher Secondary Education and Tertiary Education.

Primary Education It starts at five years of age with kindergarten and runs for seven or eight years.

Secondary Education It starts at twelve or thirteen years of age and runs for three to four years.

Higher Secondary It starts at sixteen or seventeen years of age and runs for two years

Teritiary Education It includes both higher education and Vocational education and training (VET).

The vocational schools cover a range of fields and also help gain knowledge in a variety of occupations.

Foundation Studies

Those who, in any case, do not meet the requirements of an education program can opt for foundation studies. With a duration of one year, foundation course is usually taken before starting a university program. It helps student improve academic performance to study for a full degree.

Student Visa Canada

International students who want to pursue education in Canada need to get an admission before applying for a student visa. Following is the process to get admission:

  • Decide the course and institution
  • Fill, Submit application form to the chosen institution or college online
  • Get letter of acceptance from the education provider
  • Receive Electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (eCOE)
  • Apply for the Student Visa

Visa Process

All the International students are required to obtain a Student Authorization and a Visa before going to Canada for studies and meet the requirements of the Canadian Immigration Regulations.

The candidate applying for the visa must give the authority a period of 2 months for the Visa to be processed.

Funding

A student planning to apply under Student Partners Program (SPP) process needs to purchase a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (G.I.C.) account and deposit CAD$ 10,200 as a proof of their living expense for one year in their account.

After receiving the Letter of Acceptance from the college, the student needs to process for the G.I.C., which takes around 10 to 15 working days.

Initially, the student needs to create a new email id with Scotia Bank. This process takes 4 to 5 days. After that the student needs to make a payment from his/her account through a wire transfer and pay CAD$ 10,200 and from that CAD$ 10,000 would be deposited in their G.I.C. and CAD$ 200 is deducted as Administration charge by Scotia Bank.

After the payment is done, it may take up to 3 or 4 days for the money to get credited in the G.I.C. account.

The student needs to take a print of the receipt of payment in G.I.C. and the receipt should be self-attested in the file while during the application of the Visa process.

Once the student lands in Canada, they need to open a Savings account in Scotia Bank where they will get CAD$ 2000 right away for their living expense and the remaining balance gets transferred in their account every alternate month in equal installments for their living expenses in the entire year.

Work Opportunities on Canadian Student Visa

International students, while studying in Canada, can work up to 20 hours per week to meet their living costs. The country offers many part-time employment opportunities in different sectors including hospitality, travel, tourism, Food Service, etc. However, it is essential for an international student to get aware of the requirements and obligations of their visa.
